How to Heal a Broken Heart & Find Love Again

Heartbreak. It’s one of those universal experiences that can feel like the end of the world. But here’s the truth: while it’s painful, it’s also a profound opportunity for growth, self-discovery, and ultimately, deeper love—starting with the relationship you have with yourself.

In this post, we’re exploring how to navigate heartbreak with compassion, resilience, and love. Whether you’re fresh out of a breakup or still healing from one, this is your guide to checking out of the Heartbreak Hotel and stepping into a brighter, more authentic version of yourself.

Let’s get started.

Heartbreak Is More Than Emotional

Heartbreak isn’t just an emotional experience—it’s physical and psychological too. Your brain chemistry changes, and it can feel like a literal ache in your chest. (Hence the term HEART-break.) Understanding that this is a normal response can help you navigate these intense emotions with a little more grace.

In the initial stages of heartbreak, self-care is crucial. Allow yourself to feel your emotions without judgment. (Judgment only keeps you stuck in a spiral of added suffering.) Reach out to friends and family for support—they want to help. Avoid making impulsive decisions, and instead, engage in healthy physical activities like walking, yoga, or dancing to release built-up stress and emotions.

And trust me, literally shaking it off can do wonders. If you need some inspiration, check out my episode Let That Shit Go for practices that can help you release pain and suffering.

Process Your Emotions in Healthy Ways

Processing your emotions is essential for healing. Journaling can be incredibly therapeutic—write down your feelings, no matter how messy or ugly they seem. Practicing mindfulness and meditation can help you stay present and grounded, allowing you to consciously choose how you respond rather than react.

And if needed, don’t hesitate to seek professional help. There’s no shame in talking to a therapist or trusted professional. Suppressing your emotions only delays healing, so let it all out.

Rediscover Who You Are

Heartbreak often leads to a loss of self-identity, but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Instead, see it as an opportunity to rediscover who you really are…

Engage in activities and hobbies that bring you joy and fulfillment.

Set new goals and pursue personal growth.

This is your chance to focus on the most important relationship you have: the one with yourself. Self-compassion and self-love are your best allies in this journey.

Every Heartbreak Is a Lesson

Every heartbreak is an opportunity to learn. Reflect on the relationship and what it taught you about yourself, and use that wisdom to move forward and create new, healthier relationships.

You might identify patterns that need changing or gain clarity on what you truly want. But you won’t be able to move forward fully until you forgive yourself. Forgiveness is for your peace, not anyone else’s.

And remember: sometimes relationships just don’t work out. It doesn’t have to mean that anyone is bad, wrong, or not good enough. Sometimes it’s just not a fit. Use this knowledge to empower yourself, instead of blaming or shaming yourself.

Navigating Loneliness

One of the hardest parts of heartbreak is the sense of deep loneliness. It’s important to differentiate between the pain of heartbreak and the discomfort of being alone. Jumping into a new relationship to avoid loneliness is a common but unhealthy reaction.

Instead, you can use this time to deepen your relationship with yourself. Spend time with supportive friends and family, join social groups, and engage in activities you love. Embrace solitude as an opportunity for deeper self-discovery and growth.

Opening Up to Love Again

When you’re ready, opening up to love again is a beautiful step. But there’s no rush—take your time to heal fully before entering a new relationship. Work on building your relationship with yourself first—it’s the foundation for everything else.

When two healthy, whole people come together with clarity about what they want to create, they can build healthy boundaries, communicate effectively, and truly be on the same team. Be patient with yourself, and trust that love will find you again.

A Simple Healing Exercise

Let’s do a quick healing exercise.

Close your eyes and take a deep breath.

Think of your childhood self—the version of you that has always been there.

Reflect on how this core you has remained unchanged despite all of life’s challenges. This part of you is solid and resilient.

Now, reflect (or journal) on what this heartbreak is teaching you about yourself and how you can use this information to grow. This practice will help you reconnect with your true identity.

Your Turn: Heal and Grow

Overcoming heartbreak is a journey of self-discovery and growth. It’s an opportunity to rebuild your relationship with yourself, process your emotions, and learn from your experiences. When you’re ready, open up to love again—but remember, love starts within.
